She once told me about a time someone came up to her and told her about how they were chelating their son, and my mom knew enough to be horrified. The woman told her something like, she had seen images of her son's liver and how "active" it was now, and my mom --- in her head at least --- was like, "Yeah, that's not good. His liver is active because THAT IS THE ORGAN RESPONSIBLE FOR REMOVING POISON, ya moron!" This would've been either late '80s or early '90s, probably early '90s. I hadn't seen your blog before, which is why I am commenting on such an old post.

Thank you so much for spelling out, as clearly as a person can spell it out, what is and is not child abuse under the law.

Unfortunately, I think a lot of people --- judges, lawyers, jury members and most definitely the person who wrote the letter you reference --- give parents WAY too much leeway if they believe they have "good intentions." (Scarequoted because a lot of things that pass for good intentions are not things I would give that label to --- thinking of excessively strict discipline because the parent thinks the Bible mandates it, and also, obviously, giving one's child quack autism cures.)

I think children would be better served if, instead of trying to figure out what was in the parents' heads and have that be the determining factor of whether or not abuse happened, that the relevant criterion be the effect on the child in question. There are always other options than killing your child. At one emergency department a few years ago a woman walked in with 18 month twins, said to the triage nurse 'I can't cope. It's this or I'll kill them' and walked away, leaving them there.

I can accept that you can be stressed beyond endurance by a child, but surely handing them over to someone else is a better answer?

I think these cases touch on another hidden aspect of parenting: the parent who hates their child. Somehow 'I hated her so I killed her' doesn't seem to be considered an explanation, but it seems to fit the events very well indeed.

More on parenting at my place:
http://autistwriter.wordpress.com/2011/10/31/parental-concerns/Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5000861130039293919.post-85649943614985462712011-11-02T00:25:05.542-04:002011-11-02T00:25:05.542-04:00Thank you for having the courage to write about su...Thank you for having the courage to write about such things - they do need to not only be written about, but also discussed and acknowledged by the broader community. I know this was not an easy post to write, which is another reason to thank you for it.

I too was horrified at that JRC mother's statement - I think my thought was, "that is not a 'civilized human,' that is a scared and scarred 'trained seal' and one day I hope he is free of the JRC and you and may then be able to heal and free himself of his past."

The other case, I remember at the time getting into an argument with a friend (who is also Autistic) because he was taking the approach that she just needed more support. I won't rehash the argument here because I am sure you can imagine it. But my thinking basically comes down to, "How do we support people who have to deal with such horrible parenting - and how do we get others to acknowledge it when some of our own people would seem to prefer to explain it away?"

I think the reasons for that are complex, varied, and troublesome. But that is part of one thing I think will emerge as one of the more important things to come out of ASDay - and why it's so important, which is what I plan to write my post on - except I have had a large headache most of the day and am only now getting to a place to write coherently.

Again, thank you, and I hope you will be able to write the rest of what you wanted to write at some point. This context may include religious beliefs, a general belief in a higher power not grounded in a particular religion, other beliefs on what it means to be a member of the human race, or even a belief in The Flying Spaghetti Monster.

I consider all of the above as subsumed under the greater heading of "spirituality", and still don't see the book's statement as being particularly egregious. Teachings like this are fairly common in clinical ethics classes. The point is to a) not impose your own world belief on the patient, b) realize that whatever is happening with the patient takes place in a much greater context, which involves whatever their world view is, as well as the relationships they have with family and friends, and c) assist the patient in putting whatever the current problem/situation is into whatever core values they hold, so they can make a decision that is good for them.

The book appears to be a brief "how to" book, and the authors (as I noted) seem to be light in terms of their ethics credentials. We agree that these are no Socrates, Locke, or Childress here. Still, I still think the "spirituality" objection is perhaps not so bad, afterall

JoeClub 166https://www.blogger.com/profile/01816977079856902634noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5000861130039293919.post-35267434964061015922010-11-20T23:58:49.254-05:002010-11-20T23:58:49.254-05:00Joe,

A "broader definition" is not applicable -- the context makes the meaning readily apparent.

As for the rest of the book -- as I note above, the book skimps (EXTENSIVELY) in understanding WHY the ethics codes are the way they are. A person who learned solely from the book would have no understanding whatsoever of the various controversies and disputes in modern clinical ethics. They would have no understanding whatsoever of the ethical considerations that went into writing the ethics codes (and why various people DISAGREE with them).
